Green Carpet Cleaning Tips

09/01/2013 Back To Blog

Some of the commercial carpet cleaning products used to remove dirt spots and spills contain harsh chemical ingredients that can damage your carpet or affect your health. To solve this problem, some manufacturers produce carpet spot removers that are non-caustic and environmentally safe. However, there are many easy ways to make green carpet cleaning solutions that you can use at home without incurring the cost of buying commercial cleaning agents.

How to Remove Common Carpet Stains and Spots Using Homemade Cleaning Solutions

Crayon Spots

To get rid of such spots, all you need is undiluted vinegar, which is an environmentally safe cleaning agent. To remove crayon spots, dip an old toothbrush in undiluted vinegar and scrub the stained area. The spot will disappear in a matter of minutes.

Grease Stains

To get rid of grease stains permanently all you need is cornmeal, vinegar and water. To clean the stain, sprinkle some cornmeal on the stain and wait for about 5 minutes before sponge cleaning the stained part of your carpet using a vinegar and water solution.

Coffee, Chocolate and Cola Stains

The first step in cleaning each of these stains involves mixing water and vinegar on a 1:2 ratio. To remove these stains, use a sponge to blot the water and vinegar solution into the carpet and the stain disappears. Avoid rubbing in the mixture to ensure that the stain does not spread. Continue rinsing the stained area repeatedly until the water on your cleaning sponge becomes clear.

Mildew

Whenever there is a liquid spill on your carpet, there is a significant risk of a mildew problem developing if the dampness from the liquid spill does not dry quickly. To remove mildew from your carpets’ fibers, use a sponge rub in a mixture of water and vinegar. Once you kill the mildew, remember to dry your carpet thoroughly to eliminate all dampness and avoid further mildew problems.

Red Wine Stains

To remove such stains from a light-colored carpet, sprinkle salt on the stain and let it sit for about fifteen minutes. The red stain will slowly turn pink. Once you brush the salt off the carpet, use a mixture of water and vinegar to clean the area.

Conclusion

You do not have to spend a lot of money on commercial green carpet cleaning products. You can ensure your carpet is clean and protect the environment by using affordable products that are readily available at home such as salt, water and vinegar.
